INTERCARGO and associations condemn attacks on seafarers and merchant ships in Strait of Hormuz

The International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners (INTERCARGO), chaired by John Xylas, together with BIMCO, International Chamber of Shipping and INTERTANKO, have jointly condemned the recent attacks on seafarers and merchant vessels in and around the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), 46 attacks on international shipping in the region have been confirmed since 28 February 2026, resulting in the deaths of 14 seafarers. Against this backdrop, the organisations expressed deep concern and stressed that seafarers should never become collateral victims or instruments of political and military pressure.

They also called on all parties involved to immediately cease the attacks, exercise restraint, respect freedom of navigation and work towards de-escalation, with the safety and welfare of crews remaining the overriding priority.
